Just one short year ago, a majority of Chelsea supporters couldn’t wait for the club to offload Willian, who has been fantastic ambassadors for the club the over the years, but he seemed to have lost it.
However, since Frank Lampard replaced Maurizio Sarri as the manager of Chelsea, Willian has been revitalized. The Brazilian playmaker become of the Chelsea’s best attackers throughout the season and aside from Christian Pulisic.
Willian, 31, who snubbing Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 to joined Chelsea, has been a faithful servant for the Blues ever since. The Brazilian star enjoying his beat season for Chelsea this year with 11 goals and seven assists.
He’s continued to be a vital piece in any manager’s plan and there’s a reason for it, despite what Chelsea fans may tell you. Willian is a talented player – albeit not always as impressive as his former counterpart Eden Hazard or even Christian Pulisic.
The 31-year-old winger has been the club’s most productive attacking player since the resumption, with four goals – all from set pieces – and an assist.
Willian, who short-term contracts extension expire in three weeks stalled over a new long-term deal with Chelsea.
The Blues are thought to be willing to offer the Brazilian playmaker a two-year extension to stay but he wants three more years after helping the club climb to fourth in the table.
Meanwhile, Frank Lampard has confirmed the Blues re-opened talks to keep Willian after he rejected an offer from an unnamed Chinese club.
He said: ‘Yes we are still talking with the players and Willian in particular we are talking with him. I always felt confident that they would remain.
‘They have been fantastic professionals for the club and servants in all senses and when you have that level of professionalism within you it was a sign that they wanted to stay and see out this season at least.
‘So we will carry on talking and see but I think everybody’s focus now is on these next games, the individuals themselves and us as a club.
‘I’m pleased negotiations were relatively easy because both sides wanted the same thing. The two players wanted to make sure they could see the season out with us.
‘At this point we need them in the squad they are both important players for us so I’m happy.’
