Report: Chelsea made move for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez

Chelsea have made move for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez as Frank Lampard identified him as the man to solve their defensive woes, according to reports.

The Blues boss Frank Lampard could choose to make changes to his back-line options in the coming window after a spell in which his players in that role have faced significant criticism.

But he would have to sell or loan out at least one of his current centre-backs if he wants to bring in a new player in that position as there are current a number in the squad.

And according to Telegraph claims the Blues have step up in bid for Atletico defender Jose Gimenez after have had scout at Madrid’s games a number of times.

It also added that West Ham United defender Declan Rice remains Frank Lampard top targets despite the Hammers ruled out of sell the versatile star.

The reports furthermore claims that the Hammers want £80million for Rice and would not be keen on the likes of Michy Batshuayi and Ross Barkley in exchange.

Due to this, Frank Lampard have identified Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez as alternative for Declan Rice, but the Uruguayan has a £109m release clause and Chelsea would not meet that – meaning they’d have to negotiate a much lower price.

Frank Lampard has previously said he wants players who are good in the air as he looks to resolve issues in defending set-pieces, and that is an attribute the 25-year-old has.
