Pulisic, Ziyech, Silva and Chilwell – Chelsea injury news and return dates ahead of Barnsley clash

Chelsea’s first home game of the new Premier League campaign was a tough one as they fell to a 2-0 loss against defending champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues made perfect start to their campaign with a 3-1 win over Brighton in the opening week thanks to goals from Jorginho, Reece James and Kurt Zouma.

However, goals from talisman Sadio Mane either side of a red card for Andreas Christensen sealed a disappointing result for Frank Lampard’s side.

Next up is a Carabao Cup clash against Barnsley, and Perth the chance for some players on the periphery of Frank Lampard’s squad to get some game time.

Chelsea could be boosted by the return of a number of players for the game, but what is the latest injuries news elsewhere ahead of the clash against Liverpool?

Hakim Ziyech

The technically gifted Morocco winger was ruled out of the Liverpool game due to a knee injury he picked up in the pre-season game with Brighton.

Ziyech, 27, subsequently missed the league opener against the Seagulls, with boss Frank Lampard admitting it could take a few weeks for the Moroccan to recover.

And according to The Athletic, claims Ziyech’s injury is ‘minor’ and he should be back soon.

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell, who arrival from Leicester City with £50million, has been back in training having recovered from a heel injury.

The left-back joined the west London side with the injury but after doing some individual work at Cobham’s training based, he is now nearing full fitness.

Even boss Frank Lampard has confirmed before the Liverpool game that Ben Chilwell was not ready to start the clash, and it looks unlikely that he will recover in time to face Barnsley.

Andreas Christensen

Though not an injury, Christensen will be missing the game against Barnsley due to the red card picked up against Liverpool on Sunday evening.

However, it is only a one-match suspension, so he can return to starting line against West Brom at the weekend.

Christian Pulisic

The 21-year-old was ruled out of the Liverpool game due to hamstring injury he picked up in FA Cup final against Arsenal in August.

The American winger subsequently missed the league opener against the Seagulls with boss Frank Lampard confirmed it would have been ‘a big ask’ for him to play against the Seagulls.

‘Christian was training with us last week but he had a bit of discomfort a couple of days ago when he was trying to be in contention for today,’ he said.

‘It would have been a big ask for today and he has had to take a few steps back and we will have to see.’

Speaking in his pre-Liverpool press conference, Lampard confirmed the American would not be fit for Sunday.

‘Christian Pulisic not ready. We hope they’re training and progressing.’

It looks unlikely that the USA international will be risked for the game at Stamford Bridge in midweek.

Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva was also ruled out of the Liverpool game despite appeared in Cobham’s training based before the clash.

The 35-year-old full-back has been in training with the first-team squad over the past week, but boss Frank Lampard confirmed that the Brazilian was slightly short of fitness for the Liverpool game.

‘He’s been training for three or four days. We’re working with him on his fitness Liverpool will come too soon for him.’

The Carabao Cup fixture could prove an ideal opportunity for the veteran defender to be given some minutes in the first team.
